LesGai Cinema Award - Ventura Pons
If there’s a director who needs no introduction is our beloved Ventura Pons. In the fifth edition of LesGaiCineMad, back in November 2000, the Festival had a retrospective of his most significant work, open up the door for a warm and cordial relationship that is alive nowadays.
Is not enough to say that his work is indispensable or necessary; Ventura Pons’ movies speak like few others about affective diversity, understood as another brush in a character and never its defining characteristic. Maybe that’s why, when evaluating his wide cinematography, some make the mistake to think that he’s “not gay enough”, when in fact that amount of greys, shades and china box games look a lot, but a lot, like life itself.
Since “Ocaña, retrat intermitent” (1978) until the recently released “A la deriva” (2009), his more than twenty feature films go trough Spanish contemporary life like no other director has achieved so far. The more than a hundredth awards received in his more than 30 years of filming career are witnesses of this succession of celluloid hits.
Many of us, the generation that today directs the Festival, have grown enjoying films such as “Amic Amat” or “Caricies” and they have filled us with answers (and questions, of course) about what is really to feel a different love, outside any canon.
Trough this award we want to show our audience one of the crowning jewels of Spanish film directing, and those who already know him don’t stop revisiting his wonderful portraits.
Dear Ventura, happy first thirty years next to the movies. |
